A Venture Approach to Philanthropy Print

Cure Alzheimer's FundTM was incorporated in September, 2004, and was founded by three families; the Morbys of Pittsburgh and the McCances and Rappaports of Boston. All shared the belief that strategically targeted funding will yield results with a higher probability for positive impact against the disease than funding either a broad array of basic research or various "translational" later-stage research based on the few Alzheimer's genes discovered to date.

Dr. Rudy Tanzi and six other leading Alzheimer's disease researchers and clinicians from major universities volunteered to become the Cure Alzheimer's Research Consortium to develop a Research Roadmap that starts with completion of the genetic map of the disease and progresses to analysis of the resulting genes and the biochemical pathways emanating from them to discover the most likely places for therapeutic intervention.

Research to be funded by Cure Alzheimer's Fund will follow this progression. In some cases the research will be conducted by members of the Research Consortium and in others by researchers identified by the Consortium as having the best chance to make a significant contribution to progress along the Roadmap.

Cure Alzheimer's Fund will move quickly to fund targeted research based on its scientific integrity and its compatibility with the Research Roadmap.

Cure Alzheimer's Fund will not accept unsolicited proposals.

Cure Alzheimer's Fund will not provide funds for overhead or indirect costs to grant recipients or their institutions.

Cure Alzheimer's Fund will not build an endowment and all operating expenses are covered by the Founders. Therefore, all contributions from any source will go directly to targeted research.

While research by its very nature is speculative and cannot guarantee results, Cure Alzheimer's Fund will report quarterly on the progress of its funded projects.

Cure Alzheimer's Fund does make all of its funded research available to the research community at no charge and as is consistent with the distribution of information within the research community. No attempt will be made by Cure Alzheimer's Fund to commercialize any product or process resulting from its funding.

The Founders are supported by a dedicated Board of Directors and a staff of three professionals.
